Comet Talk: Rock Art by the People of the Canyons

Free

with Dudley Gardner, Coconino Community College - Page

Calendar Feb 25, 2025 at 6 pm

Join us in-person at CCC's Page Center, or online via Zoom!

The People of the Canyons, who lived in the Upper Colorado River drainage basin, were prolific artists. From 12,000 BP to the present day, Native Americans have produced enduring art works. This presentation will look at art works produced on stone by the People of the Canyons from 3,000 BP to 100 BP. We will look at how the Formative Period farmers and gatherers left rock art that endured, and how when the horse reached the region, their art transitioned to depict new realities that changed their world. Part of the purpose of this presentation is to provide comparisons and contrasts of rock art works produced along the tributaries of the Upper Colorado River.

Dr. Gardner received his PhD from the University of New Mexico and has since published multiple reports and articles on the Native Americans in the Upper Colorado River Basin. He has worked in archaeology in this region for 45 years. His research interests include prehistoric sites and historical archeological sites and he has worked and published in both areas. Gardner was born in Colorado; after graduating high school he served two tours of duty in Vietnam then went back east to study at Lee University where he earned his BA. He has worked at Colorado State University, Western Wyoming Community College and Coconino Community College.
