Comet Walk - Wildfire Risk Reduction at Your Home

Free

with Mark Adams, Coconino Community College - Flagstaff

Calendar Jun 1, 2024 at 9 am

This Comet Walk will focus on fire adapted ponderosa pine forests and how we need to better adapt to the fire-prone forest rather than the forest adapting to us. We'll discuss hazardous fuels reductions around properties, and home hardening techniques.

Mark Adams will be leading this Comet Walk. He worked as a Hotshot for 24 years on the Coconino National Forest, working on three crews: Blue Ridge, Mormon Lake and Flagstaff Hotshots. He also served as the Superintendent of the Flagstaff Hotshots and the Blue Ridge Hotshots. He now works for the City of Flagstaff in the Flagstaff Fire Department as a Wildland Community Risk Reduction Specialist.

Information and directions for the meeting location will be provided once registration is complete.

Comet Walk - Cinder Lakes

Free

with Kevin Schindler, Coconino Community College - Flagstaff

Calendar Jul 20, 2024 at 9 am

On this Comet Walk, Lowell Observatory Historian Kevin Schindler will lead us through one of the Cinder Lakes astronaut training sites. Cinder Lake Crater Field #1 was designed to mimic one of the potential sites where Apollo 11 would land. Come learn about the rover prototype testing that occurred here as well as the Apollo astronaut training in northern Arizona.

Kevin has worked at Lowell Observatory for nearly 30 years. He’s been an active member of the Flagstaff history and science communities, having served as Sheriff of the Flagstaff Corral of Westerners International for 13 years and on the board of the Flagstaff Festival of Science for a similar length of time.  He’s written several books, including (with author Bill Sheehan) Northern Arizona Space Training - Images of America, which details the work conducted in Flagstaff and northern Arizona to prepare for human exploration of the moon. The book is available at www.kevinscottschindler.com and Kevin will have some available.

Directions will be emailed once registration is full.
